Studio Lighting and Analysis - Samantha Everton

Consider how different lighting and composition communicates mood and atmosphere.
Does it create a sense of mystery or disorientation?
Yes, different lighting and composition create a sense of mystery and disorientation in the image. This creates a mood and atmosphere in the image. You can see this in the example images above.
Does it use silhouette?
Samantha Everton does not commonly use silhouettes in her images, She often uses shapes and shadows created by people and objects in her images.
Does it describe form?
Yes, different lighting and composition describe the form of an image and its 3D properties. This helps make the 2D image look more 3D.
Where is the light coming from?
The light in Samantha Everton image mostly comes from painting with light which involves someone moving within a long shutter speed with a light source. In the final image, you can not see the person, only the light created by the source. This is what she commonly practices but she sometimes, like in her image sang tong, she uses light sources outside of the image to create shapes and shadows.
Is the light hard or soft?
Samantha Everton uses a mix of hard and soft light in her image. An example of this is in her image, camellia, where the floating cat has a hard light cast on her, whereas the girl in the image has a softer light on her.
I can take this photo into consideration in my next photo shoot by putting lighting at different spots and angles to create interesting shapes and shadows in the image like this image above. This image is a woman crawling up the wall like Spiderman. Next to her is cake with lit candles on a table and chair. The woman looks to be in an older country house. The lighting within the image and the woman crawling up the wall create the mood that the woman is trying to escape and is scared. The mood seems gloomy. I think this lighting was achieved by creating the set, then a big studio light of to the side of the camera is being cast onto the woman on the wall to create a shadow that looks like a wild animal or beast. Maybe the image is trying to communicate that the woman is half human, half animal.
