What do you see? (First things you notice?)
The first thing I notice in the large piano in the centre of the stage and the image.

What do you think the story is about?
I think the story is about how moved the photographer was by what the father did to get his son to the competition. He felt extremely fortunate compared to this boy.

Provide a summary of the story.
A boy was at a piano competition in Japan. He met another boy who was from Russia and talented at playing the piano practicing up to 10 hours a day. The boy mentioned that where they ate was expensive, going on to explain that the trip cost his father 1 year in salary. The boy then compares it to himself, a boy who goes to a private school and has opportunities "coming out my ears". Both boys made it through to the final 32 but were not selected as a finalist.

What type of language is used in the story? E.g. formal, slang, emotive etc. Provide examples of the language used to support your answer.
The language used in this story was formal. An example of this is "On the other hand, there's me, a proud private schoolboy, with opportunities coming out my ears."

Which tense has been used? Is the story told in first person? Offer examples.
Pastense has been used in this story. An example of this is his use of the words 'earlier', 'went' and 'were'. The story is being told first person. You can tell this because of the use of the words 'I' and 'We'.

Why do you feel the story has been added to the photo?
The story has been added to the photo to add a new perspective and new emotions to the image. Once the story is read, you see the image in a different light/way and feel different about what seems to be a basic image.

Can you suggest reasons for the length of the story?
Reasons for the length of the story include adding more detail to the image. It allows the viewer to see more and get more out of the image. Another reason could be to emphasize and add more emotion to the image. Emotions allow the audience to connect to the image and therefore appreciate it more.

Suggest the readership/audience for this article?
The audience for this article are the viewers and supporters of the piano competition they competed, as well as anyone interested in piano. To add, photographers are also the audience for this article. They can take inspiration to the emotional connection the photographers has with his viewers.

The newspaper has added 'the moment' as a regular feature in the weekend edition because it appeals to all people, not just photographers. The photos all connect emotionally to the audience which allows it to be viewed and understand by many.

What is your opinion of this newspaper feature?
I think this newspaper feature is a great part of the newspaper. It appeals to all viewers and it adds a lighter mood to what can be an intense and serious newspaper. It also allows the viewers to gain a different perspective and see what amazing, inspiring and interesting things happen around the world.

The first thing I noticed what the 4 barbie dolls, situated in the centre of the image ontop of a table covered in red velvet cloth.

What do you think the story is about?
I think the story is about how big the spice girls were at the time. I think this because of the masses of photographs seen in the image taking photos of the spice girls barbie dolls.

A photographer was joining the other photographers getting ready for the unveiling of the dolls. After they were unveiled, he broke away from the group and got behind the dolls. From here he took an image of the photographers fighting to get the best image of the dolls. It just shows how big of a thing the spice girls were at the time.

The type of language used in this story is formal. Examples of this include "The mass of lenses focused on the five dolls seemed to sum up the hysteria on the Spice Girls at the time'. and "I was sent on a routine job to cover the launch of that years Christmas offerings at a toy fair in Convent Garden.

The tense being used in the story in past tense. An example of this is "I was working for a newspaper in London when on a gray, morning in October in 1997." This story is told in first person, I can tell this because he is recounting his experience of the event. An example of this 'When I arrived the dolls were under a red, velvet cloth."

Why do you feel the story has been added to the photo?
I think this story has been added to the photo as an explanation to why and how the image came about. The image itself is odd in a sense that it would make people wonder why the photographer is photographing the back of the dolls instead of the front.

Reasons for the length of the story include giving a full recap of how the image came about and the reasoning behind why the image was taken.

Readers or audiences who should read the article are people interested in the spice girls and photographers in general who will find in interesting the obsession over some dolls and the genius behind the image.

The first thing I noticed was the large camel in the middle of the image and the two men tackling and holding down the animal.

What do you think the story is about?
I think the story will be about a camel rodeo, similar to a normal rodeo involving bulls. It will talk about the event and the uniqueness of it.

Provide a summary of the story.
A photographer traveled to camel races because he thought it might be a good place to get some photographs. When he arrived he saw there was a wild camel catch event going on. Before the event, he was sitting on a fence getting to take some photos until he heard some noises. When he turned around he found a camel charging at him. Luckily, he was able to untangle himself and only escape with some blood. He then convinced the commentator of the event to allow him to photograph the image of the commentary box. It was a great spot and view to take photos.

The language is mainly formal but slang can be found when referring to things and quotes. An example of formal language is 'I was there on a personal project, thinking the event might produce some interesting photographic material.

The tense used is past tense. An example of past tense being used is 'I was there on a personal project.' The story is told in first person. An example of the story being in first person is ' I climbed up onto a chute.'

I think the story has been added to the photo because it adds an explanation to what is happening in the image and why it is happening. The image itself is quite odd, so the story explains what is going on.

The first thing I noticed was the tall structure made of wood in the centre of the photograph.

What do you think the story is about?
I think the story is about the origins of the tall structure and use of it in these countries everyday life.

Provide a summary of the story.
A photographer travels to Vanuatu to take photos of an interesting ritual which takes place. People would dive off the structure and progressively the height they jumped from would get higher. From the highest point, there was a male taking longer than others to jump. The man eventually jumped with the vine attached to him. Seconds later the whole crowd were in horror as the vine snapped and his back made a sickening sound. The man was aided to and the rest of the time in Vanuatu, they constantly questioned about the man's health.

The language used is formal. An example of a formal piece of language is 'The council says there have been many injuries over the year and have called for the cessation of the ceremony.'

The tense used is past tense. An example of this in the text is 'My wife and I were attending the land-diving ceremony.' The story is told in first person. I can tell this because he is telling the story from his perspective. An example of first person in the text is 'My wife, Monica, and I.'

Why do you feel the story has been added to the photo?
I feel the story has been added to the photo because the story adds a new perspective to the image and also allows the image to connect emotionally to the audience. The story, which is quite shocking, connects with the viewers emotionally as photojournalist try to do.

Can you suggest reasons for the length of the story?
The reason for the length of the story is to tell the whole experience of the person telling the story and also add more emotion to the story, allowing it to emotionally connect more to the audience.
